SGI IRIX Onyx was the most powerful 3D graphics hardware available in the first half of the 1990s. $~250k and occupied a small room on its own.
We had one at GMD-FIT for developing 3D augmented reality applications in C++, and occasionally we played Doom on it over LAN.
Approximately 5 years later, 3D PC graphics cards (such as the legendary FireGL for $~250) were at least as powerful as the Onyxes.
@markojahnke was working with the smaller SGI Indigo for 3D Graphics, photorealistic mix of renderings in real sceneries and some animations of large infrastucture as Highways, Bridges (Fehmarn Belt e.g.) ...
was a pioneer time...
