I deleted my Facebook and Twitter accounts recently. It feels like I've shut myself off from the world, but that's an illusion. It's the world that has shut itself inside the walled garden of Facebook.
Leaving Facebook has been revealing: Out of hundreds of Facebook friends, only two people have reached out to stay in touch by other means.
@silkevicious got my dad (83) to #signal an old friend (66) to #threema an old assistant (63) to #simsme the 'young' contacts are less flexible, you are right.
@thor
@vilbi @silkevicious @thor My parents (77 and 73) are using XMPP with Conversations. My sister as well, but she doesn't care about yet another messenger on her smartphone...
@silkevicious by the way, why signal?
Take wire there you
may use phonenumbers
you can use multiple devices and
you are prepared for multiple accounts...
and you have EU servers! @thor
@vilbi
for normal user, i think they are both good.
I also have read this: https://do-the-right-things.blogspot.it/2016/11/signal-messenger-vs-wire-messenger.html
/cc @thor
@silkevicious the article tends to wire ;-)
I found signal first and discovered wire via a debate here on masto... today I would take wire and skip the step via signal @thor
@vilbi @thor you did a great job of convincing them to switch...i'm not sure i can have the same result as you (friends who don't give a sh*t about privacy, old parents, ...) ...my substitute app would be #Signal though...
