SGI IRIX Onyx was the most powerful 3D graphics hardware available in the first half of the 1990s. $~250k and occupied a small room on its own.

We had one at GMD-FIT for developing 3D augmented reality applications in C++, and occasionally we played Doom on it over LAN.

Approximately 5 years later, 3D PC graphics cards (such as the legendary FireGL for $~250) were at least as powerful as the Onyxes.

This kid actually explains hardware and software of a from 1993.
